19-08-2007

Internet and other developments at rural Macha, has brought lot of innovations. Among these are the changes in people's lives. It has brought hope to the hopeless communities, employment to the unemployed. Opportunities have been created resulting from the introduction of Information Communication and Technology (ICT). This has brought drastic changes in people's lives, economically, socially and environmentally. Many people who never have had hope have testified on the benefits of ICT. Among these is the story of a young man called Briven.

Briven Mwiinga was born in 1987in Hamoonde village, 7 kilometers from Macha. Both of his parents are permanent citizens of Hamoonde Village. Briven has one brother, he is the first born.

Briven had difficulties during has early age. Food was scarce. As a result sometimes he used to sleep with an empty stomach. Then his parents separated and he ended up staying with his mother since he experienced negligence from his father. As a result his mother decided to take responsibility of him.

The year 2001 and and 2002 were especially difficult ones, as hunger was crippling his family. Briven relied on  relief food.

Briven started school at Hamoonde Primary (now Hamoonde Basic School), most probably in 1998, although he is not sure exactly when he started school. During his school life he did not have a school uniform. He used to put on ordinary clothes. Briven wrote his grade seven exam. He failed the exam due to his inabilities to read and write well. He could not proceed  to secondary level, nor continue school due financial constraints in the family. This made him just to loiter around Macha Mission. At the restaurant he watched people making buns. He helped them to warm the oven for baking buns.

In 2005, Briven met Hey Moono. Hey is managing ABFA-MACHA Aerodrome, All-Blessings-From-Above. He was allowed to help Hey with transportation issues. He did so without remuneration for one year. Then he started working at ABFA, making some trenches and and also preparing and maintaining the runway.

Throughout this time, it became obvious to Hey that Briven was helpful, and thus he became ' spanner man' to him. After ferrying firewood to the fire place he also started cleaning the car. Because of his keen interest in car repairing, he assumed more responsibilities. Now when the car would break down, he is now responsible for checking the car, and unscrewing of parts, repair breaks and fix the wheels. It has further developed, and nowadays Briven does actual car repairs of the car, and checks the engine to assure smooth operations.
Briven has this to say, “ as someone who lost the parental care at an early age,  I am now able to buy food, clothes and feed my grandmother with whom I stay with. This is possible because of the employment I found at Vision Community Centre and Ubuntu Campus. My life has completely changed for the better. I am living like someone who has gone to school

The light now shines in the middle of the night mares of Briven. He is now ever smiling because he has acquired knowledge that he never dreamed of. He used to believed that not finishing school was the end of life. His has head ever upright now he is on a monthly salary. He used his first salary to buy clothes since he did not have enough, he only owned only four pieces at that time.

Briven is happy about the modern technology that has sprung up in Macha. It fulfilles his dreams and completely shaped his his life style for the better. Briven is amazed to  find himself at his current level. Also he is happy for the training he has received at the Community Center, really an  innovative hub in rural Zambia!

Because of the mechanic techniques he acquired at the Vision Community Center, Briven has a dream of becoming the best mechanic in Zambia.

Apart from the knowledge he has obtained in mechanics, Briven has access to computers at Vision Internet Cafe.  Before working at Vision Community Center, he thought a computer monitor was a mirror which could be used for dressing up! Briven then took his time to watch people typing on computers and finally touched the computer mouse which was a new and strange thing to him. He thought he would damage the computer if he clicked on the icon! Briven has now embraced modern technology although he does not know how to read and write. However, he has acquired basic knowledge in computers.

Briven is now a proud man with a lot of expertise acquired in rural Africa.
